George Bass :: essays research papers

Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  As I walked to the Daly Science Center from Benson Memorial with a stomach full of ridiculously expensive cheap food, I expected the lecture of Dr. Bass to be more or less of a rehashing of what he spoke to our class about earlier in the day, albeit with a few more and older people watching. My first surprise came as I opened the door of lecture hall 206 and saw all the students sitting on the stairs. I myself was relegated to sitting at the very top of the stairs, near the door, with other students sitting on nearly every stair all the way down. As soon as I sat down I was immediately drawn into the lecture by Dr. Bass’s immense passion and visible love for his field of work. My second surprise came as I listened to his tales of various escapades and adventures along the Turkish coast. The most impressive part of his lecture was his comfort in not only lecturing on the intellectual context of his work, but also his willingness to share his personal experi ences with a large group of strangers. The longer I listened to Dr. Bass speak the more honored I felt to be in the presence of a true legend of archaeology. At first I did not understand why he included the slide and story about the beach where him and his wife spent their honeymoon forty years ago. However, towards the end of the lecture when he brought us back to that same beach, I was amazed that it has come to be known as â€Å"the beach where the American’s were†. You notice I say brought â€Å"us† because that is exactly what Dr. Bass did Monday evening. He brought us as an audience with him on his trips to the Near East and down to the sea floor to look for amphoras and scarabs in shipwrecks, which before his work nobody knew existed.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  When he showed the slide of Queen Nefertiti’s scarab I though no other find he has made could top it. However, upon further reflection I believe his discovery of the oldest â€Å"book†, and glass were more historically significant items. In my humble opinion, Dr. Bass’s most extraordinary finding was his work outside of the dive sites. His theories regarding contact and trade between Egypt and the Near East, Greece, and the Middle East in the Bronze Age have gone from mere speculation to widely accepted academic fact as a direct result of his research and writing.

Essay --

A common meta-narrative surrounding the American Civil War deals with each side's motivation for fighting: the North fought to preserve the Union, while the Confederacy fought to preserve â€Å"states† rights, which tends to deemphasize the role that role racial slavery played in the nation’s history. In addition, when slavery is discussed, it is removed from political discussion and the North is often glorified for fighting for black American interests, eventually minimizing the racial tension that fraught the United States, in both the North and South. This paper will thoroughly describe the non-racial knowledge that has been subjugated around the Civil War, connect this knowledge to the grand narrative of this nation's history, and discuss how it problematizes general knowledge by deemphasizing its significance in America's history, ultimately outlining that ignorance of race relations in this country has only led to more racial tension. First, analyzing the story behind the Northern and Southern motivation for the war shines light on how and why the knowledge subjugated around the Civil War commonly minimizes issues like slavery and racism. Deemphasizing slavery by focusing history on the idea that the North fought to keep states united and that the South seceded in the name of states’ rights does two important things. First, it diminishes the role racism played in American history and it also allows racism to be hidden behind states’ rights rather than discussed in honest terms. The North did fight for unity among states, but such unity called for an economy that did not rely on slave labor (Zinn 177). The South did secede claiming states’ rights, but those â€Å"rights† were to own property as they wished, that is to say human beings ... ...ended but race discrimination is an issue that is still going on in this country. Racism has been significantly reduced but unfortunately many individuals still have to face this problem. African Americans are not the only individuals that are affected by racism today. Individuals of many other races are also affected by this issue The struggle over racial slavery may be the predominant theme in American history (Loewen 137) and should not be ignored or downplayed in any degree. Although the causes of racism are a complicated historical issue, it is important to understand the dynamic interplay between slavery as a socioeconomic system and racism as the overlying ideological system (Loewen 143). The ideological system of racism has long outlived the socioeconomic system of slavery (Loewen 144) and learning from history in this way helps to prevent repetition of it.

The Woodspurge Poem Analysis

The wind flapped loose, the wind was still, Shaken out dead from tree and hill; I had walked on at the wind’s will – I sat now, for the wind was still.Between my knees my forehead was – My lips, drawn in, said not Alas! My hair was over in the grass, My naked ears heard the day pass.My eyes, wide open, had the run Of some ten weeds to fix upon; Among those few out of the sun, The woodspurge flowered, three cups in one. From perfect grief there need not be Wisdom or even memory; One thing then learnt remains to me – The woodspurge has a cup of three.Illustration This poem took place in hill where the trees are shaken out by the wind and a field of grass where the man in this poet saw woodspurge as one of the ten weeds and grieving for his problem all day along as the wind blown. The poet described a visual imagery by points out what that man can see while grieving in field, such as in ninth and tenth line : â€Å"My eyes, wide open, had the run†Ã¢â‚¬Å "Of some ten weeds to fix upon;† The tactile imagery also can be found in seventh line â€Å"My hair was over in the grass† the touch’s feel can be sensed when his hair is over the grass as he put his head to rest on it. Kinesthetic imagery, this motion happened when the man bent his head on to between his knees until his forehead touch  those knees in fifth line, shows a grieving gesture. The word â€Å"wind† in first stanza is a metaphore from a word â€Å"spirit† or more likely a â€Å"determination†, the wind itself got a personification in third line, where the poet wrote â€Å"I had walked on at the wind’s will –.† By stating that a wind could have a will like a people. Ironically, this man seems lack of determination, he only move to somewhere as the wind guide him and stopped when the wind is gone.General MeaningIt is about a man that covered with sadness and he seems lack of resolve, his body only move as the wi nd blows to somewhere else, until he found a bloomed woodspurge that makes him at ease.Detailed MeaningBefore we going more deeper in detailed meaning, it might be wise to review the trivia fact about Dante’s poem especially The Woodspurge. This poem were made approximately between 1828 – 1882, the period where Victorian’s were arisen. Meanwhile, in the year 1848, there was a movement by a group named â€Å"Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood† and Dante was also one of the founder of this group. The group’s intention is none other than to reject social-political theme in literary works and this group also established Aestheticism movement, in the meaning of aestheticism â€Å"as early as 1750, when the German philosopher, Alexander Gottlieb Baumgarten, in his Aesthetica, used it to identify a separate branch of philosophy. He transformed the original Greek usage of the word, applied to things perceived by the senses, into criticism of taste concerned exclus ively with beauty.† (Denney 38). So, their’s intention was to make a literary works become more â€Å"aesthetic† by reject the social-political theme.Due to its a poem full with aesthetic aspects, let’s evaluate it from top to bottom. â€Å"The wind flapped loose, the wind was still,† with such words for an opening in first line, we can considered it is truly a sentence with aestheticism’s beauty. Why so? It said that the wind flapped loose, those words â€Å"flapped† and â€Å"loose† are contradicts for each other. Flapped means flutter, throb or thrashing which means it is conducted with so much power, on the other hand, the word loose means not tight, unconstrained and relaxed.A powerful wind with relaxed feeling, it made the readers will  feel the peculiar sensation by read it in matched tone, then it said that the wind was still. Wind, however, is a moving air and Dante wrote the wind with capabality to stand still, it ju st bring the imagination to the whole new level and violates the wind’s law for suited to stagnate. It is still acceptable in literary works and we can admire more the nature by imagining something that nature are not competent to, though.â€Å"Shaken out dead from tree and hill;† for the second line, it might have a denotation like this; the winds shaken out dead from tree and hill. This may have a meaning that the winds able to cleanse the ‘dead’ from tree and hill because shaken out have a meaning uncluttered, to cleanse and the word ‘dead’ might a metaphor from sadness, anguish or misery. And the wind can simply took the sorrow out of the tree, still, the wind only remove it and the melancholic trait that has been cleansed, may outgrowth again sometimes because its humane for it to happens. There is also potency that tree might a metaphor for a man but, in the next line, the poet already talked about it so this hypothesis could not fully-a ccurately correct.â€Å"I had walked on at the wind’s will –â€Å" the third line is about a man that always seems walk as the wind’s guidance. There is also an old proverb that said â€Å"only dead fish follow the stream† which is matched with the inner meaning in the third line. By not having a spirit of independency, this man chose to follow the path that the wind makes for him. But, what makes this man would did such a not-manly act? It should have a relation with a word in previous line, â€Å"dead†. The poet used the word â€Å"dead† to emphasize the next line’s meaning or this line’s, it is an anguish that made the man paralyzed, not able doing something by himself. â€Å"I sat now, for the wind was still.†At least, in the fourth line, this man stopped because the same thing also happened to the wind, it become stagnate just like in the first line’s point. The man do nothing but sit, seems waiting for ano ther wind to guide him again. If we stop too in this line, we can see the voidness in the man’s mind, he would be daydreaming or blank-staring his surrounding. This emptiness of his mind has lead to something that might be crucial and it is a lack of faith. If a faithful person even without resolve in his heart, experiencing the same condition, he might pray to his God instead of  daydreaming and asking for His guidance to overcome this stranded plight. Overall, the first stanza was merely an intro for the next stanzas, obviously.By completely talking about the setting of place in first stanza that were a hill with trees and gust of relaxing wind, it is included as somewhat parts of aestheticism. The first reason, of course, it was not social-political themed stanza, the next reason is everything can be shifted with aesthetic element and â€Å"in aesthetic forms, cruelty becomes imagination: Something is excised from the living, from the body language, from tones, from vis ual experience.† (Adorno 68).Everything in each stanza in this poem have relation with Adorno’s opinion about aesthetic forms, for instance, in the first stanza it is about a man that grieving and let the winds dictates him, however it is just an imagination that comes from cruelty. It will be far more cruel if there were man that actually looks like in this poem. And the another aspect in Adorno’s opinion will be discussed later on. â€Å"Between my knees my forehead was –My lips, drawn in, said not Alas! My hair was over in the grass,  My naked ears heard the day pass.† (5th – 8th line)The second stanza have a repetition of words â€Å"my†, the possesion form of ‘me’ and ‘I’. Besides of granting this poem with aestheticism by doing those repetition, there is also another meaning behind it. The poet intends to fill the second stanza with â€Å"ego† because â€Å"my† in this case representing a n ego, a personality. Though, the second stanza mostly illustrate the man’s body language, how he faced the void that he experienced. It cover up the fourth line’s hypothesis, that the man is not doing nothing at all, he make a motion to uncover his agony by doing this and that. â€Å"Between my knees my forehead was –â€Å" this line depicts his current position, he bent his body forward and place his head on his knees till his forehead touched it.That gesture shows him in an awful state of mind and insecure feelings, he might be grieving for his mistakes in the past or others problem that he has in his life. Moreover, this gesture was commonly known to express the deep suffering of mind and usually followed by tears that overflowing from the eyes, however, he did not cry at all. In matter of fact, he is a man and it is weird for even a man to cry for whatever the burden that he bear because  in those time, the patriarchal era, it is a time where the man al ways described as tough being and crying is for a women. So, even he has a big problem, he would not cry no matter what the problem is.â€Å"My lips, drawn in, said not Alas!† in sixth line, it can be judged how big his misery is. Even a word can not describe it, his lips drawn in means he does not even have a force to speak any words, yet, he want to yell â€Å"Alas!† for blowing off the steam but that word were not even match with his pain. Looks like his anger would multiplied for not being able to cried it outloud, still we can see him as a man with full of patience for being able to surpress his anger over his misery. â€Å"My hair was over in the grass,† in the seventh line is representation of anti-climax if we assume that the sixth line was a climax. In this line, it can be implied that he finally lie his body over the grass till the poet depicts it with his hair was over on the grass. It can be also stated that this man was already in stage of acceptanc e for lying his body over the grass, it seems he already accept the truth or the cruelty in his life.â€Å"My naked ears heard the day pass† by lying around after sitting with full of misery in the previous line, the eighth line define that the day has passed casually. In this line too, the poet combined two things that will not relate to each other yet he succeed to make it become one, Dante clarified that ears can heard the sound of the day pass by. It is weird to even imagining how the day pass’s sound, though. Nevertheless, Dante prevailed to make impression to the reader that it might have a peaceful or calm sound because it is the first time in this poem he describe the audible situation. Dante did not put any weird sound before, and yet the man in this poem heard something, so, it should be the sound of the tranquility. â€Å"My eyes, wide open, had the run  Of some ten weeds to fix upon;† (9th – 10th line)Unlike the previous lines that analyzed one by one, the ninth and tenth line have to be evaluated as one wholeness because it seems to connected yet separated as different line, this poem were written in iambic tetrameter anyway, and it would ruin the artistic part of the poem if those line were in one line. Thus, the man eyes widely open and he saw ten weeds near him, there is no special metaphor linked with these lines. Even so, this is also the first time in this poem for the man to pay attention to his surrounding  with his own very eyes. The previous panorama or landscape that described by the poet in preceding line were merely the poet’s imagery, not the man’s visual imagery. It is as well as the Adorno’s opinion previously, aetheticism can be reached by showing a visual experience, now the man had his eyes widely open and saw ten various weeds, which is nice. It also means that the field were full with green-coloured scenery due to all those weeds, green is categorized as bright colour which i s can also means a happiness, merry, just like spring’s scape. Although, he finally notice his surrounding, in no matter of time, he quickly noticed that there were ten kind of weed based in his vision. Is he a botanist? Or nature lovers? For immediately knowing there were ten different plant may be his brief assumption, but that is not the point in here, right? The truly case were located in next line and these lines were just an intro to lead this points in there. â€Å"Among those few out of the sun,  The woodspurge flowered, three cups in one.† (11st – 12nd line)The eleventh line implied the situation is happened in daytime for sun lightened those plants on the field. If we paid more attention, the third stanza were less with grieving content, everything gradually become more serene. No more sadness, no more wistful part in this stanza because the man just back to his senses, previously, he just a hollow-vessel with nothing to struggle for. Finally, he not iced his surrounding and even the smallest detail like the ten weeds, although he only noticed the woodspurge for the most, a plant with â€Å"All parts are highly toxic by ingestion; sap may irritate skin and eyes.† (â€Å"Plant Selector†).Euphorbia amygdaloides var. Robbiae is the another name for woodspurge, and it is unique for having three cups in one. Usually, â€Å"The mature flowers take a Single form, with an approximate petal count of 2† (â€Å"Plant Database†). So, it is rare occasion for found a three-petal woodspurge, In addition, a clover plants mostly have three petals and myths said that clover with four-leaves will bring a luckiness to the person who found it. Thus, what is the meaning behind from found a three-petals woodspurge? Will they bring fortune to whoever found it? Well, I rest my case for this aside and some professional said â€Å"the flower reminds us of the central mystery of Christianity: the Holy Trinity of the Father, Son , and Holy Ghost; the Trinity that breaks the rule of  fate.† (Nield). And how it can related to aestheticism? As a commoner, I put simply the metaphor of woodspurge is a faith in God. It all makes sense, at the first, he wander aimlessly seeking for nothing as the wind guides him until he stopped in peculiar area where he found a three-petals woodspurge that makes him in ease. Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, however, have a goal to make literary works become more aesthetic, more religious and have more connection with nature to confront Victorian’s literary works that full with socio-political, overly-scientific literary works which made the people’s faith fade away deliberately. â€Å"From perfect grief there need not beWisdom or even memory;† (13rd – 14th line) Again, these lines have to consider as one unity, and it have a deepful meaning in this part. The poet chose the word â€Å"perfect† to make the readers feel the absolute depression th at the man had, it is not for asking a pitiness to the man, it is about sending a ‘message’. After that man saw a woodspurge, his mind became soften then he learnt something â€Å"you will got nothing from grief, not even wisdom or even memory.†Which means there is no value for being blue over something, and its said that not even a sad memory will retain in mind, something that started with tragedy or bad things will certainly ended with tragedy too. It is true, though, and every one would not keep something bitter in their head for a long time. Somebody might choose to erase or pretend for bad incident that have occured instead of mourning it endlessly because in the end those memories will washed away for sure. â€Å"One thing then learnt remains to me –The woodspurge has a cup of three.† (15th – 16th line) In this last two lines, the poet expressed the important thing as a friendly reminder for him. In the end, he finally have one thing t o learn that woodspurge has a cup of tree which also have another meaning, if he become stuck in grief again, he should remember that there are God and his kindness that always guide him in to right path and it symbolized with three-petals woodspurge. Therefore, the last stanza is endearment of his sorrow because he certainly re-ignited his faith with nature’s help indirectly.ConclusionDante Gabriel Rossetti, one of the founder of Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, vowed to make a movement for opposing the Victorian’s mediocre literature work theme such a socio-political, science and industries that overwhelming in those times. Dante and his confidant, thus imbued Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood’s era with Aetheticism, that more linked with nature, faith and religion in sense of beauty nuance. This poem, nevertheless, were reflectioned to the people at those times, when the religion and faith were not as strong as before.Dante used wind as representation of nature and as a device to mediate people until their faith revived again, just like in this poem. Thanks to the wind, that grieving man led to a woodspurge that reminds him to his God. And it is all the Dante wanted, he wished that every people would not forget and surrender in their faith. If they did, just remember how beautiful the world it is and eventually they will keep in their mind that everything were a God’s creation.

The smallest rates within both room types are supplied by Bella Sky Comwell Hotel Copenhagen. spell superposable room facilities, roo m sizes and almost the identical prices are offered by all hotels, Kalendarevs Skyscraper Copenhagen Hotel will be positioning itself as a luxury hotel with a set of innovative and creative solutions which will allow hotel to set really much higher prices for its rooms. Its main aim will be not to stir up the lowest prices, but beam as higher prices as possible. . 7 SWOT analysis Figure 4 ? Strengths Location angiotensin converting enzyme of the most distinctive advantages of Kalendarevs Skyscraper Copenhagen Hotel is its location which is at a walking distance to city c disgrace and metro stations. Internationalized service standards I finger that enhancing service experience at global service levels along with the friendly and complaisant provide will be greatly appreciated among our upcoming customers. In addition, such service experience will be new to our area. Clean & Spacious rooms we will sustain cleanliness and comfort within all hotel rooms. Our eco-friendly so lutions such as energy consumption, diminishing CO2-emissions and electricity conservation will bring pleasant experience to green consumers. ? Weaknesses gritty prices Many expenses would be incurred at start-up stage such as grammatical construction the hotel, integrating innovations, hiring and grooming employees and outsourcing other departments. Since it all will affect our cost of rooms, we will have to initially charge higher rates for our rooms to cover staple operational expenses and to gain some market share. This is the main weakness of our hotel. small(a) room type selection Offering limited choice of room types while our competitors have variety of choices can be another weakness of our hotel. ? Opportunities tender 10-floor lodgement building which is great(p)s project has been recently constructed in Copenhagen (Archinnovations, 2010). It has 8 houses for mixed use within this building. Its a great opportunity to catch the flow of customers since this new housin g building is located close to our hotel. Another opportunity will be expanding the reckon of hotel durance and gaining larger market shares within Danish hotel assiduity. However, additional support will be call for for expansion purposes. ? Threats The major threat for our hotel is to get proper financing from the bank. This means that our hotel project and its innovations should be first ap evidenced by the local presidency and then credited by fiscal institutions. In addition, being a new establishment, our competitors will be eager to beat us by introducing lower prices and scratch line price war. It means that there is a threat for our hotel in terms of bitter competition and we have to be more alert in arrange rifle in such conditions. 3. Target Market and reasons for its selection Our primary behinds would be 3 different markets 1) Mature markets (B2C) demographically, these are women with their age ranging from 35 to 55 days old. It as well includes families w ith their main interests being shopping, eating and drinking, good atmosphere and different events. Geographically, this market part comes from Southern Sweden and Norway which is very close to Copenhagen (VisitDenmark, 2012). The main reasons to appeal to this share include high compass point of awareness of Copenhagen and ease of accessibility (proximity). In addition, as the study suggests that this pieces motivations for travelling include visit hotels and restaurants, enjoying the atmosphere, visiting different attractions, exhibitions and museums such as Tivoli and lanthanum (VisitDenmark, 2012). 2) Growth markets (B2C & B2B) here we would be intenting at high egesters (high income travelers) as well as women aged 35-55. The primary target gathering for B2B market would be Russia. The other geographic segments that we would be targeting at include UK, Germany, Holland, France, Spain and Italy. While this segments interests are similar to climb on market segment, women also tend to be more interested in local lifestyle and architecture and design (VisitDenmark, 2012). One of the main reasons to target this segment is because plurality within this segment have very limited noesis of Copenhagen city and our main aim would be to attract those people to our city as well as make them stay at our unique hotel. Moreover, it would be a great opportunity for our new hotel to showcase its innovative hotel building interior and exterior since this target market is inspired about architecture and design (VisitDenmark, 2012). 3) Green consumers. While it would be challenging for our new hotel, we would still be implementing green locating strategies to target green consumers. While guests are not always predictable, industry research showed that many guests had given a druthers to the hotels caring about the environment (environmental Leader, 2012). Since our hotel is going to be environmentally-friendly, we would appeal to green consumers as one of our pr imary target market. The reasons why green consumers choose to stay at environmentally-friendly hotel are because they are highly bear on about others and work towards the good of hunting lodge (Environmental Leader, 2012). . 1 Industry Analysis While there was a slowdown in Copenhagen hotel market demand in 2008-2009, Sadolin&Alb? k (2010) predicts that the market would recover and is anticipate to be going upwards from the family 2010, although at a slower pace. This view was back up by DTZ Research (2011). Particularly, for the fifteen-year period, Sadolin&Alb? k (2010) witnessed however one year in which city hotel demand was facing negative growth. This was the end of 2008. Still, Sadolin&Alb? k (2010) believes this segment to be an expanding segment longer term. 3. 1. Demand observation post bargaining power of buyers 35% of organic market demand with essential revenue of $794. 4 one thousand thousand is accounted on interior(prenominal) demand which Copenhagen hote l market heavily relies upon (Sadolin&Alb? k, 2010). much(prenominal) macroeconomic skips as GDp and consumer pass are highly interlinked with house servant demand. As a result, we should keep those trends in promontory when analysing the hotel market outlook. The demand of Scandinavian market in Copenhagen hotel demand accumulates to 17%. In 2009, Norway became the largest demand generator for Copenhagen exceeding Sweden (Sadolin&Alb? , 2010). From 2010 onwards, it is expected that Norwegian hotel demand would remain at high level. On the contrary, 17% dissolve in demand growth was encountered by Swedish demand which formerly scored the highest rank for Copenhagen hotel market. Study suggests that the economic outlook for Sweden resembles the outlook for Denmark (Sadolin&Alb? k, 2010). However, the holidays and business trips to Denmark are becoming dearly-won for Swedes because Danish krone and euro are much stronger than Swedish krona. Accordingly, Sadolin&Alb? (2010) belie ves that while there was a small demand decrease in Swedish segment in 2010, it will definitely recover starting from 2011 (Sadolin&Alb? k, 2010). In their market research, Sadolin&Alb? k (2010) forecasts that the annual growth of bed nights would be nearly 5% in age 2011-2014. Also, research predicts that domestic demand would be at around 37% of integral demand. 3. 1. 2 Supply outlook bargaining power of suppliers With three new hotels opened in 2009 and one new four-star hotel opened by Arp-Hansen Hotel sort out named Tivoli Hotel (400 rooms), there would be 12% increase in the city hotel market supply (Sadolin&Alb? , 2010). Since there is slow upturn in demand, this would be unprecedented annual increase in supply and would cause challenging years for Copenhagen hotel market. Also, with the construction of new four-star hotel named Bella Center Hotel in 2011, the hotel will become the largest hotel in Copenhagen with total come in of 814 rooms and 23-floor towers (Nordic Hotel Consulting, n. a. ). With these projects accomplished, the hotel market riddance is that there would be 200-room increase each other year which is acceptable to consider. As inform by Statistics Denmark (2010), Copenhagen hotel market consists of 81 hotels and capacity is 12,500 rooms in total. Arp-Hansen and Scandic Hotels, with their smaller properties progressed under Choice brands, are the largest operators in this segment. 3. 1. 3 Barriers to Entry 1) High enthronisation on start-up One of the most challenging barriers for introduction the Danish hotel industry is high enthronement at initial stages of start-up. In addition, since our new hotel is going to be innovative, there would be many expenses and risks involved. With the use of secondary research, it was identified that Copenhagen hotel market has very few properties on focussing contracts. Instead, it is a lease operate market (Nordic Hotel Consulting, n. a. ). Because of the slowdown in Copenhagen hotel indu stry in 2008-2009, the significant proceeds of investors deprivation to invest into fixed leases was reduced (Nordic Hotel Consulting, n. a. ). Therefore, it can be concluded that high investment with no support from investors makes the opportunity to enter hotel industry in this area very challenging. 2) Brand identificationAs was antecedently mentioned, there are already established competitors (such as Park Inn by Raddison Copenhagen, rook Hotel Copenhagen and others) on the market who possess customer loyalty and brand identification. Therefore, it would be troublesome for our Kalendarevs Skyscraper Copenhagen Hotel to enter Copenhagen hotel market where we would need to spend time, money and efforts in order to differentiate our hotel products and get customer loyalty. 3. 1. 4 Substitutes In the hotel industry, there could be other hotels simply behind our corner.Compared to our new hotel, these substitute hotels can be similar in terms of pricing ranges and amenities off ered. However, our main efforts, anyhow quality product and amenities, would be enjoin towards service probity and innovatory eco-friendly solutions. Hence, it will be very surd for the substitute hotels to fence with us in terms of hearty eco-friendly responsibility. Fair enough that because of the environmentally-friendly solutions and splendid service in our hotel, the value-price ratio between our hotel and competitors should be relatively distinct. 3. 2 Market Size & TrendsSince our hotels target markets are mainly foreigners, the following selective information and statistics are presented based on tourists arriving to Denmark. As to the number of tourists coming to Denmark in 2012, the number accounts to 358,858 people (Statistics Denmark, 2012). Figure 5 below illustrates the number of people out of total tourists who fit the profile of one of our target market those from Norway and Sweden. Tourists from Sweden account for 2,748 people in three age categories which a re 30-39 years, 40-49 years and 50-59 years. In per cent, it is 0. 76% target market out of 358,858 total meter of tourists. As for Norwegian tourists, the number of tourists scores 3,218 people or approximately 0. 9% of target market. As we can see, tourists from Norway outweigh those from Sweden for 0. 14%. pic Figure 5. Source Statistics Denmark (2012) pic Figure 6. Source Statistics Denmark (2012) The in a higher place Figure 6 presents the statistical data on another target segment of our future hotel with countries like France, Italy, Netherlands, Spain, UK, Germany and main B2B market Russia. The age groups are 30-39 years, 40-49 years and 50-59 years and the figures are in thousands of people. As the chart shows, visitors from Germany set the highest ranking which is total 4,861 people for all age groups or 1. 35% based on 358,858 total numbers of tourists. The second largest tourist generating region is UK from where 0. 54% (or 1,951) of tourists are coming. Similarly, the Russian tourists account for 0. 52% which is also our target market. The travellers from Spain and Italy represent almost the same smallest figures in target market, 0. 20% and 0. 18% respectively. Additional target markets include France and Netherlands. Tourists from Netherlands amount to 0. 1%, while those from France generate 0. 23% of target market. summarise % in target market is arrived by addition of all numbers in each segment which equals to 4. 99% for the year 2012. In order to determine the hotel market trend (upward or downward) in Denmark, below is the forecast for 3 upcoming years. To derive appropriate estimated numbers, we initially have to look at previous years records. According to Statistics Denmark (2012), the number of tourists from 2010 to 2011 increased by 16,106 soulfulnesss or 4. 8% (from 329,940 in 2010 to 346,046 in 2011).The same upward trend appeared between 2011 and 2012 with an increase of 12,812 travellers or 3. 7%. So the average increase number for the period from 2010 to 2012 is 4. 25%. While the total number of tourists was growing, the dowery of target market in period from 2010 to 2012 was gradually decreasing. In 2010, the total target market accounted for 5. 23% while the figure felt down to 5. 08% in 2011. As was previously stated, the circumstances in target market was 4. 99% for year 2012. Accordingly, the average decrease in target market between 2010 and 2012 was -0. 12%.As a result, the following forecast numbers (Figure 7) for years 2013, 2014 and 2015 will be predicted based on past years records. The average length of stay of international visitors to Denmark is determined as 4. 535 in 2013.This figure is arrived by surveying the average length of stay in 2011 which is 4. 42 nights and it is 4. 65 nights in 2010 (Bastis, 2011). Average hotel expenditure in Denmark per day is 58. 25 Euro per day (Carl Marcussen, 2008). It is resembling of $75. 6 (Oanda, 2012). Hence, using the data higher up the market value is estimated. As a result, Ive chosen to open my own Kalendarevs Skyscraper Copenhagen Hotel even though it is difficult project to accomplish with much creative thinking and innovations required. Having background experience in hotel industry (particularly Dedeman Silk Road Hotel where I worked), I got invaluable knowledge and hands-on training from the tip experts in this case.Particularly, the departments I worked in include gross sales & merchandising, Reservation, Banqueting & Conference, F&B and also Front Office. The idea is to draw much capacity through building other airports (Reals n.d.).In UK, airlines belonging to another country are not allowed to operate indoors the route of another country (cabotage) and hence eliminates competition in the airline industry in the UK for there is no competition from the non European countries.Increase in APD (Air rider Duty) by 8% for which all airlines ware to comply and which can translate to little travels to the UK for automatic data serve uping ultimately subjoins the cost of travels (BBC intelligence information 2012, 1st April).Airlines constrains in terms of adhering to government policies for instance the pledge by the UK government to reduce carbon emissions by 60% reflected in the UK Climate Change Bill. scotch FactorsSevere crisis in universe economics where financial systems have been destabilized and paralyzed and therefore call for to be restored to stability, otherwise translates to l ess(prenominal)(prenominal) travels by air.Stiff competition in the airline industry in the UK payable to presence of competitors who even offer low fares flights. contention was brought about by the deregulating of the Airline Industry in UKSocio heathen FactorsUKs maturation population which is approximated to tog out over the years. In light of all the changes that occur in the airline industry, an scheme has to continuously adapt to the environment in which it is operating in. In light of BAs environment, i.e. the service industry, it is paramount that the organizations strategic thinkers acknowledge that personation of what other companies are doing in the market may not always become the aforesaid(prenominal) results and hence BA of necessity to constantly study the m arket to put the asymmetries that keeps emerging in the service industry and hence develop the asymmetries to capabilities for the organization. This therefore proposes that the organization has to keep in touch with the market for instance through continuous look for and development of the organizations products and function and in light of the companys strategy of becoming an airline of preference to customers of long and short haul pension.BA differentiation from its competitors is seen through continuous explore and development of the industry which can be inferred through the analysis of the SWOT, PESTLE and the Porters Five Forces tool, continuous improvements of the companys products and run to its customers for instance through keep abreasting the organizations networks in the long, short and onus segments. In addition, BA as a front-line in the airline industry has an advantage over its competitors due to its long presence in the industry which dates to the years w here it was a state owned airline. This see the lightly shows that in adopting some strategies for instance the acquisition of Iberia, BA tries to make its presence felt in the global arena. In addition, the organization resources allows the organization to feed the inside out logic as compared to its competitors who may not have a good command of resources at their cast off and therefore making BA have a competitive advantage. The inside out logic follows that for a firm to gain a competitive advantage over its competitors, it essential have the capability of converting the handlees of exertion in a quick and trashy way and which BA has exhibited and continues to exhibit through its various acquisitions of other airlines and through mergers make with other airlines. BAs strategy that is consistent with achieving its strategy of world an airline of choice to customers of long and short haul premium is through acquisition of other airlines so that all customers are within in its reach enabled through the mergers and the acquisitions. plot of ground the theories of completive advantage suggest that for an organization to gain competitive advantage, the organization must establish a cost effective way of constructing its strategies. This means that the companys practicable costs are lowered and this leads to the company having a competitive advantage over its competitors. Therefore, BAs strategy of mergers and acquisitions is pitch or leans towards the company having a global presence in the world and hence likeable to its customers and reduction of operational costs. The truth of the environment that the organization operates in is acquire through the SWOT, PESTLE and analysis of Porters quin force (Fine 2009).In as such(prenominal) as an organization has to adapt to the environment for instance through continuous development of services and products to support the ever changing contains of the consumer, the resources that are at the dispose of an organization in light to adapting to the current trends, tastes and preferences of the consumers in the industry can depute otherwise. A companys resources refers to the blunt and the intangible resources for instance land, money and materials which are tangible bandage the intangible resources include the rational resources for instance the relationships and reputation and the competencies which include the knowledge and capabilities. One of BAs strategies is becoming an airline of choice to customers of long haul premium and which is counter acted by strategies for instance through continuous research and development in order to grade the tastes and the preferences of the customers, continuous improvements in products, services and networks and through maintaining its presence in the long, short and cargo segments. However, these strategic responses are evaluated against a understate of whether the market needs of the consumers are the once to guide the strategy making process of the firm or the firm is the one to leverage the strategies that BA is to take owing to the fact that whether there are equal to(predicate) resources to resolve to the needs of the markets so determine through the research and development process in order for BA to attain its strategy of becoming the airline of choice to customers of the premium long haul (Clegg, Kornberger & Pitsis 2008).BAs markets versus ResourcesThe strategic responses put frontwards by BA illustrates its commitment towards attaining it strategy of becoming an airline of choice to customers of premium long haul which is achieved through BA building a terminal which increased the operations of the airline. In addition, BA besides appeals to customers through transforming the customers service in that the customer service exceeds punctuality and hence customers are more pleasant which represents the rational resources of the company.BA has also proceed to grow in order to meet at the crossroads w ith the needs of the customers through launching of routes from capital of the United Kingdom to St Kitts, launch of the open skies and also flights from continental Europe to countries in North America. In addition, BA also made LAvion and started to fly from London to NY JKF. The expansion is made in the efforts of BA coordinating its efforts to have a more international perspective that is cable of come across the demands of the customers. BA Plc (2010), recognises that there are 5574 BA resources oversees and approximately 35, 920 in the UK. However, greater specificity is to be achieved through coordinating the resources and market availability (Schneider, Gunnarson & Niles-Jolly 1994).BAs commitment to the needs of the customers is seen through the purchases of aircrafts which are modern which are also in the effort of appealing to customers. Other ways through which BA appeals to its customers is through being bodied obligated through its commitment in cut back carbon emi ssions (Johnson, Scholes, & Whittington 2008).Therefore BA is driven by the outside in logic other than the inside out logic for the balance between the companys resources and the markets availability will always bode a different shift where the company strategies are more bound towards coming together the demands of the market and hence the outside in logic prevails. The Paradox of globalisation versus localization of function globalisation is a strategy that is being adopted by international corporations in order for them to gain a competitive advantage over competitors. Strategic tensions that a company for instance BA has to lay out in light of globalization revolves approximately the concept of globalization that is to be adopted in light of achieving strategic goals. For instance, one of BAs strategy is to increase its global presence with the strategic tensions in attaining this objective being whether global is to be taken in the terms of a global scope that is to refer to the geographical presence of BA in the world, worldwide similarity of the BAs products for instance, using the word global to refer to the homogeneousness of BAs products around the world or whether globalization (Thompson, Strickland & Stappenbech 1994) would be in the context of the integration of the operations of BA, that is linking the world as a system through its services (See Figure 5 for illustrations of the dimensions of globalization).A different tension lies in whether BA is to respect the differences that exist between markets defined by national boundaries which can be done through designing products and services that meet the needs of customers in different countries. The paradox of globalization and localization is a challenge that BA has to address in light of its strategy of having a global presence with questions ranging on how the company can address the globalization synergies and at the same time remain relevant in addressing the local synergies.BA s Globalization and LocalizationTo begin with, one of the ways through which BAs strategy of global presence is achieved is through the strategic response of having a global connectivity for all the customers and this is achieved through BA establishing tier in most of the major(ip) cities in the world or through expansion which is gained through BA partnering with other airlines for instance the low fares airlines or through mergers for instance the merger of BA with Iberia, code sharing with Kingfisher carrier in India (in 2010) and the recent acquisition of BMI from Lufthansa in 2012.In addition, BA is one of the largest airlines in the UK a position that the company has gained through having a large fleet size, locomote to over 300 destinations in the world and has shareholdings in BA city Flyer, Comair, Flybe, Open Skies, AIG, ICCR and BMI. In addition, the global presence of BA is felt through BA being the 5th largest airline by plan passengers.Without much further ado, the paradox of globalization versus localization for BA is congruent with the wave-particle duality of whether BA develops a business form distinctively different from its competitors or whether industry logic is the one that largely determines the firms strategy. In analysis, the drivers of globalization are market drivers, government drivers and competitors drivers which have less to do with BA developing a business theoretical account that is distinct from its competitors. As a major airline in UK, BA enjoys economies of ordered series and understands that it must have the oligopoly characteristics where firms operating in an oligopoly market cannot act independently on their own (De Wit& Meyer 2010) and hence disputing the fact that BA can develop a business model distinct from its competitors (Porter 1985).owe to the drivers that make a firm to be globalised, BAs strategies are mutualist with its competitors. For instance, deregulation brought new agreements for example the EU US Open Skies agreement in 2008 which brought a shift to competition in Transatlantic Routes and as a result the US Carrier Deltas, US Airways and the Continental started operations at Heathrow in 2009. Therefore, it is less convincing to claim that BA develops a business model distinct to it for clear facts exists to establish the claim that it does not act independently of its competitors and one of the ways it does so is through the strategy of having a global presence in response of what its competitors are achieving (the operations of other airlines which are taking advantage of deregulation to coin agreements and operate in other countries) (Roth & Ricks 1994).The paradox of reactivity and SynergyThis paradox brings into focus a companys dilemma of how to respond to the competition in the industry and whether the company can match the demands of the market and at the same time maintain the reactivity of the business. In order to have synergies in an organization there is nee d for a company to unify the different activities carried out in the organization which in some instances may make a company lose its business responsiveness. For a company to attain synergies and at the same time attain responsiveness (Mintzberg, Quinn & Ghoshal 2002), the organization must draw out clearly its corporate scope for instances of how many businesses the company should have, corporate distribution, for instance the weight that is to be put on each business unit in the organization, coordinated mechanisms for instance of how the synergies in the companys business should be achieved and the attention mechanisms that ensures that the synergies so developed are a reality to the company. The meeting point of a business responsiveness and the synergies so created, results to the paradox of responsiveness versus synergy. vexation demands presents a business to forces that pull it apart while the synergies pulls the company into an integrated whole.BAs Responsiveness vers us SynergyOne of BAs strategies is to meet the ever changing needs of the consumer for instance meeting the needs of the ageing population which requires the company to provide more value to the products offered to this market segment, reinforce the companys brand, development of new products and also through enhancing customer homage (Mintzberg & Ahlstrand 1998). For the company to achieve the above strategy through the strategic responses discussed above, there is need to coordinate the various units of the organization into a functional whole whereby units so entrusted with the development of new products, researching on upcoming market trends are an integrated whole of the organization and hence the synergies. For instance, the finance discussion section of the organization needs to avail funds to the research and development of the organization so that proper(ip) research on upcoming trends is conducted effectively. This belief is consistent with making the parts an integra ted part of the whole for the whole to function as one unit, that is the organization (Raynor 2005).The paradox of responsiveness and synergy can be best achieved when the management and the leadership hyphen demonstrates control or managed chaos. In a controlled leadership, a company attains responsiveness (Porter 1996) and at the same time attains synergies because the management of the organization is organized in such a way that the different businesses or the department in the organization are headed by leaders who have the same goals. In a leadership where there is chaos, the synergies and the business responsiveness losses focus for the management is not organised to attain the responsiveness and the synergies (Mintzberg & Ahlstrand 1998). .ConclusionIn light of the volatility of the airline industry, the strategies that BA has put in place are best achieved when the paradoxes of globalization versus localization, markets versus resources and responsiveness versus synergies are analysed in the context of the dichotomies applicable to paradoxes. In so doing, BA will not only maintain its current position as being the best airliner in the UK, but also attain competitive advantage over other airliners who are its competitors and also potence entrants (McGahan & Porter 1997).BibliographiesReals, K. n.d., UK will Suffer Unless hanker Term Aviation Policy is developed CAA.
